Choosing The Right Builder


This is the most important decision when undertaking a project in your home. Factors to consider are their qualifications, experience, reputation and confidence in their abilities. Specifically you should check a prospective builders references and ensure that they are appropriately licensed and carry the correct insurance.

It can also be worthwhile to check with the Department of Fair Trading regarding any complaints that may have been lodged against the builder.

And before you make you decision, interview prospective builders and obtain firm quotations for clearly defined scope of works.

Finally - when you have selected your builder remember to sign a contract that specifies the scope of works and details all costs, terms and conditions associated with the project. This is the best way to protect the interests of both parties.

Your Local Council


Alterations and improvements to your home need to be approved by your local council before work commences, but be aware that regulations vary between councils.

Generally speaking, you will need approval for any work of a structural nature which affects the appearance of your home. Such work includes, but is not limited to, decks, pergolas, garages, fences and retaining walls. There are also strict regulations about how close you can build to your boundaries, trees, privacy etc.
